Chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD) caused by smoking and long-term exposure to other inhalable noxious substances has a high disease burden worldwide and is the fourth most common cause of death globally. There is a high suspected burden of COPD due to exposure to long-term indoor and outdoor air pollution in Africa. No systematic investigations have been previously carried out. Tanzanian Lung Health Study (TLHS) gives first data on COPD prevalence in a rural as well as in an urban population sample and investigates risk factors including the potential influence of TB infection on chronic lung disease. The study equally aims to provide for training of Tanzanian scientists and study personnel in methodology and techniques of lung health research.
